"The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go." — Dr. Seuss (I Can Read with My Eyes Shut)

Today in science we are learning about voluntary and involuntary movements.

Voluntary movements are movements that we can control.
Involuntary movements are movements that we cannot control.

First, we had a staring contest. It was a lot of fun!! But we couldn’t control our eyes from blinking.  We decided this was an involuntary movement.

Next we talked about how we can’t control our lungs. Our lungs are always moving in and out because we need oxygen to survive.  Another involuntary movement.

Then we talked about our heart. Our heart pumps blood around our body.  We can feel it pump up and down when we put our hands on our chest. We cannot control our heart’s movements.  Wow, so many parts of our bodies do so many involuntary movements.

Finally we discussed how we can’t control our bodies from wobbling when we are balancing on one foot, or when we are doing a one-footed hop. We had lots of fun trying out our voluntary and involuntary movements.

Today we did some research on how to build a moving vehicle.  After exploring a few websites, blogs and Google images, we found these cars:

The students decided these cars wouldn't be fast enough.  They want to design cars that roll FAST!!!  In the words of students "Oh no, no, no, that car won't go fast enough!  My car has to roll SUPER SUPER fast!!"  Conclusion:  Wheels move faster than legs!

Push or pull...

Today we have been doing even MORE research for our car design. We have been learning all about pushing and pulling. When we push or pull we are using energy to move our car. Check out this cool website

http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/scienceclips/ages/5_6/pushes_pulls.shtml

At our grand prix we need to make sure we push our vehicle hard. When we push our vehicle hard we are transferring lots of energy into our car. The energy makes our car travel really far. Energy is something that let's us do things. There are lots of different kinds of energy.

Some things around us that use energy are:
People walk (Ava S.)
Shark uses energy to swim (Seth)
Motorbikes use energy to move (Jordon)
Computer uses energy (Mia J.)
Birds fly (Mia L.)
Fans use energy (Madilynn)
Horses use energy when they move with their legs (Annalise)
Dogs run and use energy (Braith)
Kicking the ball and running and getting the ball uses energy (James)
Running uses energy (Liam)

Week 4

We were SO lucky this week to have a visit from Nucrush trucks!  We were very excited to learn about how trucks move, how different parts of the truck move, and what different trucks are used for.  Have a look at some  of our photos:

We got to sit in the truck and have a look at the different buttons that move the different parts of the truck.
We also got to press the button on the radio and talk to our friends in the other truck!
Look at us lining up!  We are so excited; it was hard to stand still and wait our turn!!
Thank you Nucrush! We had a great visit with you!
